This film series isn’t really big per say, but I do remember seeing it at Blockbuster when I was a kid. And after I ran across this flick again, I was surprised to find it had 4 sequels. I wouldn’t say I’am a fan of a majority of the holiday horror films besides Halloween up to the point of watching these movies. Silent Night Deadly Night 1 was actually a pretty solid slasher film. It had a pretty good story, it was fairly original, but it was pretty corny in the dialog department. The first one was so good in fact that they retold the entire story in number 2. I’m not kidding, the first 38 minutes of the second film just had characters gabbing about the events in the first one while showing long clips of the previous film!

The whole idea of a killer Santa to me is hilarious, and that was the reason I started watching these. The killer Santa aspect leaves this series after film 2 and abandons itself completely in film 4. Film 5 sort of comes back to the Christmas killer idea but doesn’t come back in the slasher path, but instead brings in a new story with killer toys. Film 5′s killer toys angle, if you ask me is an attempt to capitalize on the success of another film titled ‘Puppet Master’ from 1989 that later spawned into its own series.

If you’re a horror fan, I’d check out the first one, the second one, and if you like to laugh I’d watch the 5th one.

Silent Night Deadly Night (1984): An orphan with mental issues grows up and kills people dressed as Santa and gets gunned down.

Silent Night Deadly Night 2 (1987): The brother of the orphan from #1 escapes from the nut house and kills a nun as Santa then gets “killed”.

Silent Night Deadly Night 3 – Better Watch Out! (1989): The killer from #2 is not dead he was in a coma. He wakes up and goes after a blind woman with ESP.

Silent Night Deadly Night 4 – Initiation (1990): A reporter investigates a suicide and gets involved in a cult that wants her for their matriarch.

Silent Night Deadly Night 5 – The Toy Maker (1991): A human sized toy/cyborg with aspirations of getting a new family creates and distributes killer toys.
