The Plot

In this sequel to the Evil Dead films, a discount-store employee (“Name’s Ash. Housewares.”) is time-warped to a medieval castle beset by monstrous forces. Initially mistaken for an enemy, he is soon revealed as the prophecised savior who can quest for the Necronomicon, a book which can dispel the evil. Unfortunately, he screws up the magic words while collecting the tome, and releases an army of skeletons, led by his own Deadite counterpart. What follows is a thrilling, yet tongue-in-cheek battle between Ash’s 20th Century tactics and the minions of darkness.

The Verdict

This movie is a direct sequel to Evil Dead 2 and although it started slightly different than the last one ended, it’s an amazing movie. Army of Darkness is a horror-comedy film and the effects and humor is designed to be campy and over acted. The only reason I point this out is because some people don’t like this movie because they pick it up expecting it to be scary and leaving disappointed, which I wonder how it’s possible not to like this film.

Ash (played by Bruce Campbell) is the main character. The film opens with a re-cap of the last film and him ultimately flying into a portal into the past. The year is roughly 1300 A.D. and the knights of that era have taken Ash to the castle to be thrown into the “pit” because they assume him to be one of the enemy’s men. So as Ash is dragged through the town he is cursed at and beat up and after professing his innocence, he is beamed in the head with a rock and falls in the pit. The pit itself is just that, a giant hole but inside is hungry demons that kill anyone that falls down inside. Ash starts to get his butt kicked by one of the demons but one of the town elders throws him his chainsaw and he quickly kills it.

After Ash climbs out of the pit he makes it clear that he is not to be messed with and is the man of the hour. Come to find out, there is a legend foretold that a man will fall from the sky and deliver them from the ‘dead-ites’ but they need a book called the ‘Necronomican’. The book can also send him back to the present time, but only the chosen one can quest for it. Before Ash can lift the book safely from where it lies, he must say 3 words. As Ash finally gets to the book he forgets the last word, which starts a chain reaction that brings the dead back to life and wanting the book.

As Ash rides back to the castle, the army of the dead is being assembled and is getting ready to storm the castle. Ash leads the defense by showing the ancient people some karate moves, showing them about black powder, and decking out his Oldsmobile Delta 88 with a huge propeller and armor. The big fight ensues and the skeletons storm the castle and eventually break in. There is a long series of sword fights that culminates with the mortals winning and retaining the book. The town elder/Wiseman makes a potion from a recipe in the Necronomican and upon drinking it, he arrives in the present time working his old job in the housewares department of S-Mart.

“Shop Smart…. Shop S-Mart”

As he tells his story to his co-workers about how he could have stayed and been king, he is met with disbelief until a demon attacks the store and Ash blows it away with an amazing array of fighting and shotgun work. The film ends with him kissing one of the hot customers in a mini-skirt with him saying “Hail to the king baby”. The End.

Army of Darkness is flipping awesome. Bruce Campbell is amazing and hilarious, and the quotes are so memorable it’s insane. This movie is one of my favorite movies of all time and If you haven’t seen this movie I highly recommend it. I rate this movie a 9/10 for being hilarious, original, and memorable.
