The Verdict
Cowboy Bebop, Cowboy Bebop and Cowboy Bebop. That’s all my friend talked about and he made me check it out, and I have to say he was right for loving it. Lets start off by saying that this is my first Anime film I’ve reviewed. After talking with the Twitter Following I’ve decided to expand the reviews and explanations to Anime Movies, and what better title to launch it off with that Cowboy Bebop. The series used to play on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim line up and I totally fell in love with it. For those of you that haven’t seen the series, it follows a dysfunctional group of unsuccessful bounty hunters in space. It seems like every time you turn around they are going after another bounty and for one reason or another they seem to never get paid… and if they do it’s really minimal. The main characters are Spike Spiegel: a care free and down to business wild card looking for a girl, Jet Black: a serious minded Ex Cop with a robotic arm, Faye Valentine: a beautiful ex con-artist and gambler, Ed: A genius little girl, and Einstein: A genetically experimented on smart dog. The ship they live on is called ‘The Bebop’ and in the future setting where the show takes place, a Bounty Hunter is referred to as a Cowboy hence the name ‘Cowboy Bebop’.
We start off with Spike and Jet closing in on a small bounty. The criminals in question are holding up a convenience store, and Spike and Jet are communicating via radio headsets. Spike as always doesn’t give a crap about the several men inside with guns, or the large man outside thats acting as the look out, in fact he sounds like he could fall asleep at any moment. Spike walks up to the look out and looks down at his shoe. As the large man is barking at him to beat it, he two gets curious and looks at his shoe just as Spike kicks him in the face taking him out of the equation. The next thing we see is Spike walking in the store with headphones on, acting like he is unaware of the store being robbed at gunpoint. As the men surround him, Spike proceeds to kick the crap out of all of them as Jet too enters the store from a ceiling vent. As the two are cuffing the bounty heads, another one comes out of the bathroom and grabs a lady and holds her hostage. He demands they drop their weapons and Jet complies. Spike being more bold aims and fires several shots into the man’s chest, killing him. (roll opening credits)
Back on the Bebop the team learns of a 300 million woo-long reward for a terrorist that has been planting bombs in things. The terrorist has gotten ahold of a virus and plans to unleash it on the world on Halloween. Later on down the line we learn that the terrorist’s name is Vincent and that he was in the Martian Special forces and had been tested on. When Spike gets Vincent’s whereabouts he goes after him alone, and gets shot in the stomach and thrown out of a train and into the ocean. During the fight between Spike and Vincent a woman that knows Vincent tries to reason with him but he goes crazy and causes an explosion after he throws Spike out of the window triggering the virus to kill all of the passengers aside from the woman.
Spike is taken in by an Indian and nursed to health. The woman ends up also being a former member of the Martian Special Forces, and she also has been tested on. The virus is actually a military Nano-Weapon and the testing Vincent and the woman were involved in was that very same weapon making them somewhat immune to it. The testing they went through was an anti-virus of sorts that would fight off the nano-virus, but the anti-virus made Vincent go out of control. As the nano machines move throughout his body it slowly kills him. The more nano weapons that are in his body, the more he starts seeing lighted butterflies all around him. The butterflies that resemble sparks are the machines taking over his brain. The anti-virus in Vincent’s blood cause him to enter a dream state, he has lost a lot of his memory and the spark butterflies he sees perpetuates the thought he is living in a dream. The military captures Spike and Electra the woman that was involved with Vincent in attempts to cover up every piece of information involved with the virus.
Spike and Electra break out of the jail cell the military had put them in, and during their escape they steal the vaccine the military scientists were making from Electra’s blood. Spike, Electra, Jet, and Faye meet up at the Bebop and plot on how they are going to stop Vincent’s crazy plan, but the problem is that it’s an out door Halloween festival and may be disguised. As Spike is going to the festival he is chased by the military that is trying to kill him, while he is going after his bounty. Spike commissions Jet to find some planes to spread the vaccine over the festival to cure the unsuspecting people when Vincent infects them. Fay is sent on her on mission to go to the weather station to make it rain. Spike finds Vincent and they have an epic fight in the upper level of the Eiffel tower as the crowed celebrates unaware below. As it begins to rain, Vincent detonates a large jack-o-lantern float he had rigged to explode and spread the virus into the crowd. As the planes are spreading the vaccine, Spike begins seeing the butterflies and is distracted by them as Vincent stands over him with a gun in his face. Vincent asks Spike if he had died on Titan (back in his military experiments) or if the world was just a dream the butterflies were showing him. Electra shows up on the Eiffel Tower just as he Vincent is questioning his reality and he points the gun at her instead. She shoots him with a fatal shot and he says he remembers that he had loved her. As Spike looks towards the sky the butterflies start to disappear in the rain showing he was cured.
See you space cowboy…
